N&C OBTAINS $7.7 MILLION SETTLEMENT FOR PROPERTY OWNER IN EMINENT DOMAIN CASE

Emmett Haywood and the law firm of Nicholls & Crampton recently represented the owner of a landfill in an eminent domain case against the North Carolina Department of Transportation Turnpike Authority. The Turnpike Authority acquired by condemnation a portion of the landfill property for the Western Wake Expressway. The Turnpike Authority offered $4.3 million as just compensation for the taking. On May 15, 2015, Mrs. Haywood negotiated a settlement on behalf of the owner with the Turnpike Authority for $7.7 million. According to Lawyers Weekly, this settlement was the sixth largest among all verdicts and settlements obtained in North Carolina during 2015.
